The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “the state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 26.2 percent of Americans aged 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a year.

Mental health doesn’t only affect you as an individual but also affects the people you love as well as your job. It is very alarming to know that many people are affected by mental health disorders, which basically can be prevented if proper management is considered. Living a healthy life means giving importance to your sanity, just as much as you do with your physical well-being. Optimum health can only be achieved if you are physically and mentally fit.

So, how do you take good care of your mental health? Here are three tips:
  • Talk about your feelings. Talking to people is good for you. Talk therapy, which was discovered by Sigmund Freud, is one of the effective strategies to stay mentally fit. It helps you express your thoughts and feelings especially when you are troubled about something. Talking to a family member or your friends about what you feel can help you organize your thoughts and lessen your burden. Having a support group of family, relatives, and friends can help you in dealing with any challenges that come your way. The stronger your support system is, the easier it is to recover from any problems.
  • Take care of yourself. Being healthy means having a healthy mind and body. You have to take good care of your body by eating the right kind amount of food. Eat a good amount of nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables. These foods are rich in vitamins and minerals that can lead to a healthy body and mind. Drinking plenty of water, exercising, and getting enough hours of sleep are just some of the activities that can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Take a break. According to a survey, 33% of people say that they are living with extreme stress. These people are usually stressed because of work, family issues, or financial problems. The more stress you get, the more at risk to physical and mental health problems you are. One of the best ways to manage stress is taking a break from work! Spend your weekends away from work or spend quality time with the people you love. Not only will you forget about the stress of work, but you will also come back revitalized and productive.
Taking good care of your mental health is not a very difficult thing to do. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to keep sane. Just follow these three basic tips and it will help you become mentally fit and live a healthy lifestyle. Stay fit. Stay mentally healthy!
